Positive Black Gay Media Sightings: Precious, Miki Howard and Mo’Nique

on February 2nd, 2010 by B.Graff

Oscar nominations were announced yesterday and it’s no surprise that Precious is well-represented. The film is up for six awards: Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing (Joe Klotz), Director (Lee Daniels), Actress (Gabourney Sidibe), and Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique).

Daniels is the second African-American to be nominated for best director. John Singleton received the honor for Boyz N The Hood in 1991.

Based on the critical acclaim they received for their performances, Sidibe and Mo’Nique should be considered the favorites in their respective categories. I hope Daniels wins because I am sure his acceptance speech will be provocative and at least on par with Dustin Lance Black’s statement following his win in 2009.

March 7 could be a triumph for the black gay community.

Speaking of Mo’Nique, she deserves praise for speaking up about the role of black LGBTs and the church. On the January 25 edition of her daily BET show, she and singer Miki Howard engaged in a great discussion on the subject.

Howard, best known for her r&b hits “Love Under New Management” and “Come Share My Love,” was on the program to promote her book Always Has Shoes.

During her segment, Howard reflected on her experience in (closeted) James Cleveland’s church, noting “it was really gay. We didn’t know that people thought that was bad. We didn’t know that outsiders thought that was bad. So that’s one thing we really explore in the book and how I came to be me.”

Mo’Nique backed her up: “I applaud you for addressing that, because most times we run from it. … I applaud you for not judging it, because like you said, we didn’t know anything was wrong with it. For all our gay brothers and sisters watching, please know that you are always welcomed, baby. We love you — the no judgment zone! If you in church and you gay, God ain’t judging, baby, so be who you wanna be.”

It is very refreshing to see people shining light on the obvious fact that there has always been a significant LGBT presence in the black church. One hopes that more houses of worship take heed to their message.
