CNN Insults Gays, Gives Weak Apology

on April 9th, 2010 by B.Graff

Several months ago, I wrote about a BBC poll question asking if gays should be executed.

It seems that CNN is determined to show American media can be as homophobic as its British counterpart.

On March 6, anchor Kyra Phillips had a discussion on whether homosexuality could be cured. Its guest was noted ex-gay Richard Cohen, who was portrayed as an expert despite being expelled from the American Counseling Association due to ethics violations.

Media group GLAAD requested an appearance on CNN to refute Cohen’s statements, but it was cancelled at the last minute.

But thanks to viewers who voiced their dismay with the segment, Phillips was compelled to respond. But her characterization of herself as a victim sapped any credibility from her comments.

For those who can’t view the video, a partial transcript follows:

“Richard Cohen was not the most appropriate guest to have on, but it is a decision that we made and the result of that is our continued discussion today. That is what journalism is all about and we will continue to do our best to discuss gay and lesbian issues in a fair way on this program.

“I wish that all of you knew my heart. And as a journalist with a long track record of covering gay and lesbian issues, I wish that those of you who sent me vicious emails watched my newscasts more often because if they did my guess is they would not have been so quick to send such hateful messages.

“They don’t know my record and my unswerving support for all communities in the battle for human rights, including gays, lesbians, and transgendered individuals. And to make it perfectly clear, I love debating issues, it evokes passion. But if we cannot treat each other in a civil manner, even when we disagree, then we will never move forward and have a world where all people are treated with the respect that they deserve.”

This statement is wrong on so many levels that I’m surprised she thought this would shield herself from criticism.

First of all, notice how the humanity of gays is up for “debate” and “discussion.”

Do you think CNN would “debate” President Obama’s effectiveness with a member of the KKK? Or host a “discussion” about September 11 with members of Al Queda as the only guests?

It would never be allowed to happen. The fact that the segment was even aired shows the lack of respect for LGBTs in mainstream media.

Her claim of “unswerving support” for gays, even though she sees no problem asking if they can be cured, also rings hollow. Silence and giving a one-sided presentation are not how you show support. There are many people who are against gay rights but claim that in their “heart” they love gay people. This sounds like a variation of the “love the sinner, hate the sin” rhetoric that LGBTs often hear.

Finally, accusing the LGBT community of not maintaining a “civil manner” when challenged by homophobes is ridiculous. This is not some abstract, academic conversation. We are talking about people’s lives!

I think CNN needs to be reminded that this so-called apology was less than heartfelt. Here is their contact information if you’d like to express your opinion.
