Tyler Perry Donates $1 Million To The NAACP

on December 12th, 2009 by B.Graff

I may not be a fan of his films, but I give Tyler Perry much respect for his million dollar donation to the NAACP.
His gift is the largest ever from an individual artist and comes as the organization celebrates its 100 year anniversary.
This is significant on two levels. As seen by the [...]

A Rebuttal To Donnie McClurkin

on December 7th, 2009 by B.Graff

Far too often, homophobia in the black community has been met with relative silence by black LGBTs.
That is why I was so happy to see last week’s ad from black gay activists rebutting the latest crazed statements by Donnie McClurkin. For those unfamiliar with the “ex-gay” preacher’s outburst, he recently gave a speech condemning gays [...]

Pee Wee Kirkland Speaks On Hip-Hop

on November 28th, 2009 by B.Graff

For those unfamiliar with Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland, he is a legendary basketball player from the 1960s. He was blessed with such skill (he is credited with inventing the crossover dribble) and quickness that he is still considered the most talented point guard in the history of New York City.
Rather than bask in [...]

Yesterday was the funeral of Jason Mattison, Jr. Jason was a 15 year old Baltimore student who was murdered last week in his aunt’s home. He had been raped, stabbed in the throat and head, gagged with a pillowcase and stuffed into a closet.
The perpetrator, 35 year old Dante Parrish, [...]

What Do Gays Do After Maine?

on November 11th, 2009 by B.Graff

One week after gay marriage was defeated in Maine, the LGBT community continues to look for answers.
The loss was particularly bittersweet because all the advantages seemed to be on the side of gay marriage supporters. They had more money, local media and politicians were on their side, and polls indicated that it would pass. [...]

Fools Of The Week: Herman Thomas and Robert Reaves

on October 6th, 2009 by B.Graff

I’m a big believer that the closet is a dangerous place to be. Not only does it force people to live dishonest lives, the tension between refusing to acknowledge your true desires and the need to satisfy sexual urges often leads to unsafe practices.
In two recent cases, people crossed the line into illegal [...]

Black Women, Stop Blaming Black Gay Men For Your Problems!

on October 2nd, 2009 by B.Graff

Just one day after I mentioned how surveillance culture and technological advances have given everyone access to your private behavior, here comes another example of what can happen in the age of the internet.
When Michael Cole Smith and Jamil Smith got married several weeks ago, they posted photos of the event on Facebook for their [...]

Lessons From Derrion Albert’s Murder

on September 30th, 2009 by B.Graff

Much has been written about the death of Derrion Albert, a teenager caught in the middle of a fight who became the target of the crowd’s wrath.
Television, the internet, and radio have already dedicated coverage to the story, but there are conclusions to be drawn from the incident that I feel have not been explored.
(1) Surveillance [...]
